Aren't they pretty? LOL
I'm not 100% sure I'm going to keep them, but they happened to have my size at the store where I needed to buy Jones' scout uniform. And they happened to offer a 10% discount because I was buying said scout uniform. So, I just happend to buy them.
So far, I've only walked around the house in them, but I really like them. I didn't think I would, but I do. I want to try them on the treadmill, but they can't be returned if there is any apparent wear. I'm still trying to figure that out LOL. I just want to make sure they don't rub me weird once I start running.
(Shhh, but I'll probably buy those other "barefoot" shoes too. There's a reason Beer Geek calls me his "little Imelda"...)

"Mama Goes Masters" Virtual Race Winners!
First off, you are ALL winners! Every single one of you got out there and pushed yourselves to the best of your ability. The fact that you were willing to do it in honor of someone you've never met was just awesome! Sadly, I can't afford something for everyone, so I had to pick a few names for random prizes. But first, here are the winners based on speed...
40K
Tonia and Angie B both ran the whole distance at once (Angie did the entire thing on a treadmill! Barefoot! Holy crap!) They will both receive something special that has yet TBD.
RunningLaur and G both ran the 40K over two days (still way more than I'm willing to do these days!)
The four will each receive one of the below piles. (Bet you can figure out who gets what LOL)
Dash won the 4 miler (twice! LOL) and Kiesha won the 8.25 mile distance.
They will each get one of the below piles.
Now that the speedy mcspeedsters are taken care of, I want to do one shout out before I announce the random winners. J ran with his mom, Lindsey, and was by far the youngest participant. So, I'm going to send hin a little something to reward that effort.
And the random winners are...
GIS Runner
Slowly Growing Old Together
Heather O
Stephanie
Jamie
And finally, Amanda
Thanks again to everyone! I have one last request! Please choose one "new to you blog" from the list of participants and stop by and say hi. Tell them I sent you (and I promise I will read and comment on every. single. report, it just may take me a while. ) If you won, please email me at mom2shoo at gmail.com with your address and I'll get your package out to you.

I NEED Fall
Ok, I know I spend a lot of time whining about hot weather and not liking summer, but that isn't the real issue today.
Today's issue is that I really need to do a long run and my only option is to do it today. I loathe doing long runs on the weekend. It totally messes with my day. I don't enjoy getting up early (note: it's 7:30am EST and I'm drinking my coffee, so obviously I didn't manage super early). I don't enjoy trying to run before our day gets going and I have so much to do (and it's hot), so during the day is not an option. I need the kids to go back to school so I can go running on "my time" and go back to enjoying my weekends.
I need to do 6.8 miles to finish 30 for the week. I should do 10-12 to get ready for the half marathon. Anyone want to place a be on which mileage I actually manage this morning?
In other news, I'll announce winners tomorrow. Yesterday was just super busy and I haven't had a chance to organize the prizes. The response was huge and the cut and paste took me forever (I promise I'll start commenting again soon, but the virtual race took all of my alloted "MCM Mama" time each day.)
Also? Shoo spent the night at his first sleepover last night. *I* didn't sleep well, not having my little boy here. He may have been ready, but mama was not.

Holy Over-Committment, Batman!
Last fall was really insane around here. Between soccer, races, and birthdays, we had a lot going on. This year looks to be even worse. I planned to do less this year, but as far as I can tell the only thing I'm not doing this year that I did last year is room mom for the boys' clases. (And let's not make any assumptions yet, I'm not very good at the word "no".)
Instead of subtracting, I've added my blogging gig, cub scouts for Jones, soccer for Shoo (Ack, how did I become a "soccer mom"?), RRCA certification classes, working on a book fair at Jones' school, a potential coaching job, and races EVERY.WEEKEND from September 18 through October 24.
I guess it's a good thing I'm running nearly every day. Otherwise? My head would explode.
And in news of the weird, last night Beer Geek was watching History channel while I was doing stuff on the computer. All of a sudden, I realized he was watching a show with a segment about Dean Karnazes. Needless to say, I got sucked into it. I can't remember the last time I watched the same tv show as my husband LOL.

Three Things Thursday: MissZippy, MGMVR report #2, and race update
1. A huge shout out to MissZippy! There's a guest post up by her over at Metro DC Mom. She was kind enough to write up a review for me on a local event that I haven't attended, so go show her a little love there or at her blog.
2. "Mama Goes Masters" viritual race report #2 - the 4 mile edition. 4 miles in 35:33. I ran intervals on the treadmill today: 5 half mile intervals at an 8:07 pace. For some reason, this felt harder than the 8 minute full miles I did outside last week. Go figure. It was hot. I got sweaty. My awesome headband from Tonia at Racing with Babes stayed in place. What more can I ask for?
Thank you all for the awesome birthday wishes. It was great to wake up to lots of happy birthdays here and on Facebook. Really made my morning. I had a pretty good day. The boys and I went to the National Geographic Museum, which was pretty cool. Jones and Shoo gave me a lovely necklace. I ran the aforementioned mileage. Then we had Thai food for dinner and I drank one of my remaining Dominion Baltic Porters (one of the few left from when they brewed in VA). All in all, it was an awesome day. Still up - dinner at Mad Fox this weekend and then drinking with friends on September 11 (had to find a non-home game weekend). Stalkers are welcome on 9/11 as long as they buy me beer. ;o) And if you didn't click over to my other blog, here's what you missed...
3. I've gotten lots of fun race reports and gathered cool stuff. The winners of the 4 and 8.25 mile virtual races will get a pair of socks and a few energy type things (gu, nuun, bars, or the like). All of the 40K participants (I know of 3 so far) will get a little something special. I will then give out at least 3 (probably more) prizes to randomly selected winners. Prizes will include socks, a TMB headband (donated by the lovely Tonia), and whatever energy items I have left. Winners will be announced on Sunday (probably).*Disclaimer: All items except the headband were purchased by me.*
See the list of participants below. If there is not an * next to your name, I haven't heard from you (or your email went to spam). If I don't have your info by Saturday, you lose your chance to win a prize.) Thank you to all you awesome people who made my 40th birthday something to be excited about instead of something to dread!!!

Heading home
I can't believe my two week vacation in Wisconsin is over. It's been a really good two weeks. The boys have had a great time with my parents and I've gotten some good "me time". Even more importantly, I've gotten some good "run time".
One of the best things about visiting home is that I can run as often and as long as I want. I've run more 60 miles since my plane landed. I've run hills, done a long run, and pulled off the best mile repeats I've ever done (yes, I did see a mile that started with a 7). I've run by myself, on the treadmill, with my dad, and barefoot. I'm hoping to head out before we leave for one more quick set of 800s.
And when I get home, I'm buying myself a birthday present...
A new pair of running "shoes"!

"Mama Goes Masters" Race Report #1
Yesterday I set out to run my 8.25 race as part of my 11 mile training run. (I plan to run 4 miles on my actual birthday. I will not be doing 40k, unless you want to add all my miles for the week together LOL)
It was supposed to be 63 degrees at 6:30 am, so I planned to get up early and run before church. Instead, my dad offered to run the last five with me if I waited and ran after church. I decided to wait.
After church, I ate a banana and headed out into the very sunny day with my handheld. My hamstring and ankle were feeling tight, so I ran a slow warm up mile.
I turned on to Main Street and picked up the speed a little. There was some shade in the downtown area, but I quickly ended up out in the sun. Mile 1: 9:36
I kept going until I ran out of town and sidewalk. (1.4 miles into my race LOL) I hit a few sidestreets to add some mileage and finish mile 2: 9:32.
As I turned around, I discovered I'd been running downhill the whole way. Ugh. I also got honked at by an old farmer (not sure if it was approval for wearing a running bra and shorts or disapproval for running like that on a Sunday morning. Gotta love small towns.) Mile 3: 10:00
By mile 4, I was dripping sweat and about halfway through my bottle of nuun. It was only about 82 degrees, but the sun was intense. The worst hill of the run was ahead of me. Needless to say, it was not pleasant. Mile 4: 9:57
Mile 5 was pretty flat with a little bit of shade. The only hill was going up over the railroad tracks and then cutting up through the church parking lot to my parents' house. Mile 5: 9:50
First 5.1 miles done in 50:00. I ran in, used the bathroom, refilled my bottle, and headed back out with my dad. I'm pretty sure I would have stopped and not run anymore if he hadn't been going out with me.
Mile 6 was ok. My stride and my dad's tend to fall perfectly in sync, so I just let my dad set the pace for me. He did a good job of mixing up the hills and flats in their neighborhood, but their was absolutely no shade. Mile 6: 10:00.
I started to fall apart in mile 7, but just made myself stick with my dad. I focused on breathing and staying in sync with him and just let him lead me around. I had moments of being able to pick up the speed, but all in all, I was dragging. Mile 7: 9:52
Mile 8 was more of the same. I was counting each .1 mile and struggling to keep going. I managed it, but just barely. Mile 8: 9:59
The last .25 of my "race" was part of what was actually mile 10 of running. I was so done, but determined to at least finish 10 miles. It could easily be this hot on race day in September in Virginia. I finished that .25 in 2:30.
My overall time for the 8.25 was 1:21:20. Not my best time ever, but not my worst either. Considering the sun and the hills and the fact that my overall distance was the longest I've run since May, I'm pretty happy to average under 10 minute miles.
I kept going to the end of 10 miles of running and then decided to walk the last mile home. My dad headed off to do a faster mile and I turned back towards their house. Since I was a mile from home, I ended up deciding to just run slowly as far as I could. As I knocked off each .1, I made myself a new goal. Once I hit 10.5, I knew I'd end up making the whole 11. Surprisingly, even though it felt slow and awful, my last mile clocked in at 10:22. I finished the whole 11 miles in 1:49:13.
Glad today just calls for an easy recovery run.
(I've started getting emails of race reports. If you are running, please get your report to me by August 28th. Reports received after that date are not eligible to win any of the cool prizes.)

About that meet-up...
Friday night I met up with Running Diva Mom, Chelsea, Heather, Kerri, and Mom Running from Cancer for dinner at Porta Bella, a wonderful Italian restaurant near State Street in Madison. They were all getting ready to run the Madison Mini on Saturday, but let me crash their party. (I hemmed and hawed all summer about whether to run, but decided that the logistics were more than I felt like conquering. Instead, I'll be running 11 miles this afternoon some time.)
Running Diva Mom had put together some awesome goody bags for us. I got my first Sweaty Band and LOVED it. I'm a big fan of the Bondi Band (got a new one of those too!), but my hair is pretty short right now and it tends to move up a bit in the back. The Sweaty Band stayed right in place when I ran on Saturday. Anyways, there was a lot of really cool stuff and I really appreciated it!
Running Diva Mom even made us cookies. I thought I'd give them to the boys, but when I tried to take the shoe out of the bag to take a picture, the frosting stuck. So, I ate them. Can't give the boys an imperfect cookie, now could I? What kind of mom would do that?
All in all, it was an awesome evening. It was great to get to know some Wisconsin runners and the food was fabulous. RDM was even nice enough to let me park at her house and give me a ride back from the dinner (I spent the day in Madison at the Childrens museum with the boys - pictures here), so that I didn't have to try to find my way out of downtown Madison at night.
The only less than thrilling part of the evening was my drive home. City girl + Prius with annoying light reflecting on window + misty rain + dark country roads = extremely stressful drive. Give me an interstate over a pitch black country road, any day!
Saturday (since I wasn't running the half), I hit the treadmill for a five mile run. I ended up doing four miles and then took off my shoes and ran another 1.2. It was obvious very quickly that I hadn't run barefoot since I came home. My feet felt tender afterwards and my foot strike was a little "slappier" than it had been in a while. Guess I'll have to work back up to where I was.

Running blogger meetup and CSN gift card winner
Last night I went in to Madison and met up with five other running blogging women. It was organized by Running Diva Mom and it was a blast. We got some cool goodies, had some laughs and ate some yummy italian food. I'll post some pictures and links tomorrow.
There were 85 entries in the CSN Stores $60 card giveaway and the random number generator picked #70. The winner is Heather at The Crazy World of a Running Mom. Her blog is a "new to me" blog and I just read that she's had to stop training for her fall marathon due to injury. Stop on by there and give her some running blogger love.
Thanks for playing, everyone!
(Heather, send me an email at mom2shoo at gmail.com and I'll get them to send you your card.)

Reverse Triathlon
Yesterday, I did my first reverse triathlon. Aren't you impressed? Ok, I'll be honest - the run was real. My dad and I did 4 miles at a 9:46 pace. He wanted to go faster, but two days of fast running had pretty much trashed my legs.
After the run, we took the boys over to a huge parking lot to attempt to teach Shoo how to ride a two wheeler. Did I get on a bike? No, I just got to run behind Shoo as he did his best to run into the two posts in the lot.
Given that it was hot and humid and I hadn't showered between the run and the bike, we decided some pool time was in order. We jumped into my parents' pool where I proceeded toswim laps float for a half hour.
There you have it. MCM Mama's version of a triathlon. ;o)
Don't forget, the CSN giveaway ends tonight at midnight EST.
Also, when you get done with my virtual race, go check out Laura's 10x10 virttual race. Sign up and tell her I sent you.

Three Things Thursday: Speedy running, deep fried everything, and virtual race
1. My running has been going really well this week. I ran four miles on Tuesday with my dad and we finished in 35:17, with the last mile clocking in at 8:34. We weren't planning on going that fast and I was worried about what it would do to my mile repeats on Wednesday. Much to my surprise, I rocked them: 8:03, 8:05, and 7:56. (Hal Higdon said I should run them at HM race pace, but where's the speed work in that?)
2. Today we are taking the boys to the Dodge County Fair. From what I've heard, you can get just about any food you can think of fried or on a stick. Surprisingly, Wisconsin barely makes the top 25 in "fattest states" with 60% of its residents overweight or obese. It's a good thing I'll be balancing my fried cheese curds with lots of running and about 10 servings of vegetables fresh from my mom's garden.
3. On your mark, get set, go... I've seen a couple of posts and mentions of people running the Mama Goes Masters virtual race. I'm entirely too flaky to keep track of what I've seen, so make sure you either email your results to me at mom2shoo at gmail.com or leave me a comment on a post. I need to know how far you ran (4, 8.25, or 40k, you may do more than one), your time, and a link to a race report if you write one. I'll continue to gather them all and do a mega post around August 27th and announce all the winners.

Tuesday randomness
A little bullet pointy goodness to start the day:
- Jones found out his teacher assignment for the year. He got the one third grade teacher he actually knows. I'm not sure who was happier - him or me. He's a pretty anxious kid, so having a known (and loved) entity to start the year will hopefully make the transition to third grade easier than the transition to second grade was.
- I ran four miles yesterday morning. It started out rough with my foot bothering me (it feels like I have a rock in my shoe, but it's just the plantar wart), but then I started focusing on form and running light. I ended up doing the last two miles at 9:09 and 8:48 with minimal effort. Guess I need to focus on my form more.
- Yesterday we went to the Milwaukee zoo. The weather was beautiful and the animals seemed to appreciate that it was way cooler out. I got some awesome pictures of the big cats. (Feel free to go over to Metro DC Mom to see other pics)
- Beer Geek is safely back in Virginia. He only came out for a long weekend and now he gets to enjoy his annual week+ of silence in the house. We make sure to video chat each night so he gets his daily dose of loud.
- The problem with running in just a running bra is that it's addictive. I love not having a shirt rub against me when I move. I feel weird running like that now that it's cooler out. Apparently the truckers around here approve of that outfit though.
- Today's my annual outlet mall shopping spree. I always buy a ridiculous amount of shoes at the Bass outlet and I plan to hit up the Adidas and Nike outlets pretty hard today too. Need anything?
- Don't forget my CSN stores giveaway! It ends Friday.

And the winner is...
Tonia!
Winner? What winner?
Tonia gets the award for craziest, most awesome runner. In case you don't read her blog (ok, I know you all read it, who doesn't?), she ran the 40K Mama Goes Masters Virtual Race this weekend ALL.BY.HERSELF in three 10k loops and a last 10K on the treadmill. If that doesn't make her special...
Go read her report and tell her she rocks. Because she does.
The Mama Goes Masters virtual race is still open- 4 miles, 8.25 miles, or 40K. Five days until it starts (40K people have a lot more flexibility, including being able to run it over 2 days, not that Tonia did). Email me at mom2shoo at gmail.com if you aren't on the below list and want to be or if there's a problem with your link. I'll organize the list by distance once I start getting reports.
(And if you can't get enough of me today, Metro DC Mom is guest posting over at Parenting by Dummies. Yeah, I get around...)

Great Taste of the Midwest Review
Yesterday, Beer Geek and I got to attend the Great Taste of the Midwest for the first time. We've wanted to go for years, but getting tickets involves a lottery, camping out overnight or having connections. Finally, we found a connection. ;o) (You didn't think I actually camped out overnight, did you? I'm way too old for that. LOL)

Halfway through the fest, we decided to take a break from the heat by going back to the hotel. We decided to take the scenic route...
I learned quickly that I will never run a trail race. Muddy path + tree root + a few beers=
Thankfully, I had a change of clothes back in the room. We headed back to the event, drank some more beers, and managed to make it to last call. We then headed back to the hotel for a dip in the pool and some hot tub time with some guys who work for Founders Brewery.
And file under "Things you'd only see at a beer festival in the midwest"
This was one of the best (if not THE best) beer festivals I've ever been to and I've been to quite a few. They obviously have it down to a science and, despite a huge crowd, we got into the festival quickly and never stood for more than a minute or two while waiting for a beer. Of course, it helps that Beer Geek and I would rather try beers from smaller, lesser known breweries than the big guys.
We ran into some old friends...
Barnaby used to brew in VA and is now with 3 Floyds
My "beer boyfriend" from New Holland
A well-known beer writer and a fellow fan of Mad Fox
We had an awesome time. I got to taste a lot of different beers and had a brat and deep fried cheese curds for lunch. I even got to drink three different versions of Dragon's Milk - 2008, 2010, and a cask version. I loved them so much, I decided to declare it publicly.

How to find motivation to run negative splits
- Ignore the radar picture you see on the computer
- Think to yourself that the clouds are nice and the breeze feels great
- Decide to run a little faster than easy pace on the first mile (9:36)
- Decide at the end of the first mile to keep running away from the house
- Get very focused on your running and stop paying attention to your surroundings
- Glance over your shoulder and notice that suddenly the sky is black
- Start running towards home
- Hear thunder
- Run faster
- Glance over your shoulder and see lightning
- Put the pedal to the metal and run the last mile in under 8 minutes, barely beating the downpour.

In honor of Friday the 13th, a CSN Stores Giveaway
Recently I was contacted by CSN stores to give away a $60 gift certificate for use in any of their stores. Since I'm always excited to get something to give to my loyal readers, I happily said yes. I've been waiting for a special occasion to offer this and we all know how much I love the number 13. So, what better day than Friday the 13th?
Of course, my next step was to go "window shopping". I wanted to see what I would buy if I were a winner. However, I got sidetracked. Beer Geek and I bought our current dining room table 15 years ago when we got married. We got it from one of those places where you take it home and assemble it yourself. It's seen a lot wear. Jones went through a stage where he used to stab it with a fork at dinner time. Shoo has pushed on the side of it so often that it started swaying from side to side (nothing a few L brackets couldn't fix LOL). So, yeah, I never got past the dining table site.
Want to win a gift certificate to buy pretty much anything your heart desires? Here are the ways you can get an entry (leave a comment for each):

Three Things Thursday: Running in hell, running bras, and circle swim
1. I think running in hell might have been easier than my run today. Why? Because I assume hell is a dry heat. When I headed out for my run today, it was 80 degrees with 85% humidity. I thought I left the heat back in VA, but apparently it followed me to Wisconsin. Add in the fact that my parents' neighborhood used to be a corn field and you have zero shade. I managed 5 miles at about a 10:25 pace before I started to get a headache and called it quits. I'm still debating one more mile on the treadmill.
2. I've officially crossed over to the dark side. I've now run several times outside in a running bra. I'm afraid the glare from my scary white belly might blind drivers, but it's just too hot to wear much these days. I think I may need to find some routes that don't involve construction sites though. Just sayin'.
3. Circle swim? I know you guys are going "huh, Mama doesn't swim". You'd be mostly right. However, it is HOT here and my parents' have one of the round Intex pools in their backyard. I've actually been in it. I attempted to do a little swimming for exercise. Going across the pool takes about three strokes, so I tried to swim in a circle. After I swam in to the ladder three times, I decided that maybe I should just relax and enjoy the pool.
Now I'm off to get a massage. Camp Grandma and Papa is the best camp ever. ;o)

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Swag
Running the "Mama Goes Masters" Virtual Race? Here are some of the things you might win. Wonder what else I'll find this week?
Tuesday included a 3.1 mile barefoot run on the treadmill (more on the skirt later), a flight across the country, 3.5 miles in shoes on my parents' treadmill, a swim at the local pool, and a haircut. Today looks to include much of the same craziness including a 45 minute tempo run in the heat.

I didn't run on Monday
It was the first time since the end of June (except while we were on vacation) that I didn't make an active decision to not run. Every day for over a month I've decided if I was running and figured out when I would do it. Monday, I planned to run. I had the boys with me all day and I ran around like crazy, packing and cleaning and running errands and... I planned to go out when Beer Geek got home, but he had a meeting run late. I planned to hit the treadmill while the boys played Wii, but I got sidetracked getting things ready. I planned to run while they were eating, but decided I was hungry. I planned to run after the kids were in bed, but I started paying bills. I planned to run when I got done, but I finally admitted defeat and gave in to being tired and having a sore foot. (Who knew such a small spot could hurt so darned bad? I gave birth without drugs and I'm popping advil for a plantar wart? Really?)
I think the problem was that I forgot to put it on the "to do" list.
Tuesday's To Do List

Monday Randomness
Some days life just calls for bullet points:
Some Alaska photos just 'cause...
- Today is 8/9/10. I don't want more kids, but I would have loved to give birth today. LOL I love that Jones' b-day is a binary palindrome and Shoo was born on Halloween. Today would have been a really cool day too.
- I've discovered I really enjoy running more days a week. I always claimed that my body couldn't handle more than 4 days a week, but I guess I was wrong.
- I have a small, very painful plantar wart on the bottom of my foot. It's really pissing me off lately that running hurts because of a small spot on my foot. It's not even a running related injury...
- The boys and I leave tomorrow for Wisconsin. My "to do" list is as long as my arm. I'm hoping to meet up with Running Diva Mom and Jamie from Running and Some Sauce on Top. Anyone else want to try and meet up while I'm out there? I'll be sort of near Madison.
- I am currently running Safari, Firefox, and Camino at the same time. Between my business, this blog, and my personal stuff, I have WAY too many passwords to google applications. I've heard that they are now have a multiple login ability, but I haven't tried it yet. One of these days I'm going to post something on the wrong account and really regret it. ;o)
- I just wrote a post on flying with kids on my other blog. If you have some great tips, I'd love to add them. Go to Metro DC Mom and leave a comment.
- While I'm in Wisconsin, I get to attend the Great Taste of the Midwest Beer Festival. I'm just a little bit excited about that. ;o)
- I think I'm going to use Hal Higdon's Advanced Half Marathon training plan as the basis of my plan for the Wilson Bridge Half. I only have about 7 weeks left, but my current running level seems to match up well with it.
- VA had a tax free weekend this past weekend and our LRS participated. Guess what I bought? Socks!! For you! OK, only if you participate in the "Mama Goes Masters" Virtual Race and are a random winner. ;o) I'm actually planning to do both the 8.25 and the 4 mile race myself.
- I also went on a bit of a shopping spree at REI and got lots of yummies for prizes.
- There's an outlet mall near my parents' house that has an Adidas outlet and a Nike outlet. I'm hoping to score some cool stuff to add to the prize pile.
- This weekend I bought a laptop for my business. This is the first time in 15 years of marriage that I've had my own computer. Of course, Jones is already begging to use it, so I expect we'll be getting a computer for the kids in the next year. Anyone bought the Mac Mini yet? I'm wondering if that would be sufficient for them...
- Ok, I really need to get on that "to do" list ASAP.
Some Alaska photos just 'cause...

Well, hello there, training plan...
it's nice to meet you.
I woke up at 2:45 this morning and could not fall back to sleep. I hate to admit it, but I think beer is starting to affect me the same way wine does. I only had two beers, but it was enough to disrupt my sleep. I stayed in bed until Beer Geek got up at 5. At that point, I figured I'd try and get out for a run by 6 am to avoid the heat of the day. (I'm kind of over the 90+ degree runs at noon.)
I haven't run early in a while, so it took my body a while to get with the program and I didn't get outside until closer to 7. I had 6.8 miles on the schedule in order to hit 30 for the week. I planned to just take it easy and went out at about a 10:30 minute pace. At mile 5, I dropped down to a slightly faster than 10 minute pace, figuring I had less than 2 miles to go. I ended up getting into a groove and finished 10 miles in 1:40:19, which is an average pace of 10:02. Woot!
While I was running, I decided that it was get time to get back on a plan. Running planless is not working for me. I've decided to train as if I'm going to race the Wilson Bridge Half on September 19th. Instead of racing it, I'll be pacing C. Mom (if she wants me). Now I just need to tweak a plan to make it what I want.
I'm a girl with a goal and that makes me happy. ;o)

Happy, happy mailbox
Yesterday evening, I got a nice surprise in the mailbox. I had 3! packages. Woo hoo!
The first was my iGo Charge Anywhere that I won from C.Mom.
I haven't used it yet, but I'm very excited to try it. I got the tip for my cell phone, but you know if I like it, I'll be buying the one for my Garmin Forerunner.
The next package contained my TMB Endurance tank. I couldn't resist ordering this when Tonia put it up.
If you are considering buying one (Do!), just know that the tanks are super long (I've seen women clubbing in shorter dresses...) and cut pretty small, but are quite stretchy (I bought a large, even though I usually wear a small or medium). Love it though!
The final package was a running bra from Kalyx that I won on Jen's blog. I originally got the Embrace Running bra, but I didn't like the way it fit under my armpits, plus it was cut shorter through the body than most of my running bras.
Kalyx was kind enough to exchange it for another one and the new bra arrived today. This time I got the Kickstart bra. I'd share a picture, but it's cut a lot lower than the above bra and umm, this is a family friendly site. I took it out for a run this morning and LOVE it! It was very comfy and a lot cooler than my other runner bras. I'm not sure a well-endowed woman could run in it, but it was plenty of support for me.
Running has been a major suckfest lately. I went out on Thursday for a five mile run. It was hot, humid, and sunny and I found out afterward that the "feels like" was 101. Smart? Not so much. Yesterday's run was a bit cooler, but I think I was still dehydrated from the day before. I hit a wall at the three mile point, which was unfortunately a mile and a half from my house. The slog back to the house was not pretty. I actually turned off my garmin twice while I walked slowly. Thankfully I had my amphipod handheld with me. I thought I'd take today off since I got up late, but it was below 80 out and I couldn't resist that. Three and a half miles with some fartleks in the last mile and a half. It wasn't an awesome run, but it was way better than the last two. I haven't run a long run yet this week, so hopefully I can drag my sorry butt out of bed early tomorrow and get it in.
Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend!
The last five pounds
I've never really talked about weight loss. I don't have any tips on how to make lifestyle changes or increase your calorie burn. In fact, except for pregnancy, I haven't had huge weight swings. Instead, I've spent much of my life fighting the "last 5-10 pounds".
When Shoo was a month old, I looked like this:
(There aren't a lot of pictures of me from the first few months and I'm not brave enough to share the one that really shows how big I was.)
7 months later, I looked like this:
I have to admit I like the way I looked in picture 2 much better. In fact, if I could look like that again, I'd be over the moon. I didn't work hard to lose the weight. I lost it all by breastfeeding a child with allergies. (Yes, giving up dairy, eggs, nuts, and soy while breastfeeding drops the pounds like nobody's business, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it.)
I'm only 5-10 pounds heavier than that now. And I don't think I look fat.
But I really miss being able to walk into my closet and put on the skinny jeans or the straight cut dresses. It was the only time in my life I felt skinny instead of "average" or "chubby". I have drawers full of the pants and shorts from when I was nursing that I can not comfortably wear now.
The weight I'm at now is the weight that my body comes back to easily. I can go on vacation and gain a couple of pounds and return to this weight in a week without trying. I can eat what I want (within reason) and have some beer on the weekend and I'm back to this weight by Tuesday. I can run 37 miles in a week or 10 miles in a week and my weight barely fluctuates. Unfortunately, it's also a weight where "baby got back".
So, my first goal for my 40s is to come to terms with that. I'm planning to add some cross training and I'm going to be watching my snacking and obviously I'll keep on running. We'll see what that does. A year from now, if those skinny pants and shorts don't fit, I'm getting rid of them.
Because in all honesty, I'll take my strong legs that help me run marathons and the yummy beers that I enjoy sharing with Beer Geek over skinny jeans any day.

Three Things Thursday: Barefoot Running, Coaching, and Virtual Racing
1. I continue to work on the barefoot running. I'm up to 2.3 miles on the treadmill now. I'm still trying to figure out what to wear outside that will protect my feet from asphalt, but not compromise the feedback and feel of barefoot running. Last night, I watched a video on Jamoosh's blog that showed some drills for correcting posture. Of course, as soon as I watched it, I had to see how my feet hit the ground when I run. As I ran around the basement in my pajamas, I discovered that when I'm running barefoot, I can't do a heel strike, only a mid-foot strike (which is good). I wanted to try out the jumping rhythm drill, but, ahem, I was in my pajamas and was afraid I might hurt the girls.
2. I spent Wednesday afternoon talking with an IRL mommy friend about her running. I'm going to be working with her to help her become a stronger runner and hopefully run a race this fall. That's two people now who actually want to hear what I have to say. So.very.exciting!!
3. I am amazed at the number of participants in my Virtual Race!!! I think there are 66 at this point. Thank you all so much (and to all my new commenters and followers, WELCOME and I'll be around to your blogs as soon as I can). There will be at awards for the top in each distance, plus AT LEAST three random winners. I reserve the right to have additional random winners or award things for reports that I love. Oh, and if you want to do the 40k over two runs, I've decided that's ok. I've realized that most of you who are considering that option are training for fall marathons and won't have hit that kind of mileage yet. Oh, and when you are done with my race, make sure to check out Amanda's PR challenge for October and November. You know I'll be doin' it.
If you have commented or sent me an email, your name should be below. Please check to see if you are there and if your link is correct. If I've made a mistake ('cause my eyes were crossing by the time I finished) or you aren't on the list (or you want to join now), send me an email at mom2shoo at gmail.com. I'm so excited!

Mostly wordless Wednesday: the rainy days
The last couple of days we were in Alaska, it rained. We still had a good time and went on a boat ride and a hike in the rain.
The boys on the boat.
Why, yes, that is a loaded gun. You know, in case of bears.
What? You don't hike with an umbrella?
And then we came home.
I hope you've enjoyed our Alaska vacation pictures. It was definitely one of those "trip in a lifetime" sort of trips.

And on the 14th day...
Mama rested.
Yesterday my run was physically and mentally challenging. Doing the speedy run the day before left my legs like lead. Mentally I was just not feeling the love. The run itself ended up going ok, but I think it's time to take a day off. Could I push through and keep going? Yeah, probably, but streaking has never been a personal goal. I love running, but I like my days off too.
Speaking of goals, I'm putting off making any major goals for myself for the moment. I'm going to try and run at least 30 miles a week for August. Not sure how that will pan out as I've decided not to run the Madison Mini while I'm home. Wonder if I can manage serious mileage with very few long runs? Not even sure I'll be that upset if I don't make it. (I think burning the candle at both ends plus running 13 days in a row has caught up with me.)
Instead, I'll be setting goals for someone else. Another blogger isstark raving mad enough willing to let me coach her to the finish line of a local half marathon. So, welcome C.Mom to the MCM Mama posse! We haven't met yet, but she's local to me, so I plan to meet up with her for at least a couple of runs. I'm also toying with the idea of pacing her to the finish line at the Wilson Bridge Half Marathon.
So, follow along as I get C. Mom to the bridge!
Administrative note: If you haven't already, please send me an email with your distance and blog address to mom2shoo @ gmail.com if you are participating in the Mama Goes Masters virtual race. It'll make it a lot easier for me to link everyone when I publish the participant's list in a couple of days!

Go for the beer, stay for the food
Beer Geek and I have been to a lot of brewpubs. I think I could safely say more than a hundred for me and way more for him since he travels for work. Obviously, we go for the beer, but one thing we have discovered is that the majority of the brewpubs have fabulous food. Sometimes it's more upscale (which is ok with us), but a lot of times it's a reasonably priced place with good sandwiches or pizzas or local specialties. Almost universally, they are family friendly. (That's your travel tip for the day, you can thank me later.)
Our trip to Alaska was no exception. We hit every brewpub and brewery in or near Anchorage and on the Kenai Peninsula, with the exception of the Moose's Tooth. We would have hit that one, but we needed to return the rental car and it wasn't walking distance. Instead, we hit Humpy's, which had a phenomenal beer selection and I got one of the best meals I had on vacation.
Out of four non-breakfast meals in Anchorage, we had three at brewpubs. We hit Glacier Brewhouse, Snow Goose Restaraunt/Sleeping Lady Brewery (where I had a crab stuffed halibut that was amazing along with their Scottish Ale and the boys LOVED their root beer (second tip of the day - many brewpubs make their own root beer and most do not have caffeine or high fructose corn syrup)), and Midnight Sun Brewing Company.
Once we got to the Kenai Peninsula, we hit mostly breweries. We hit Homer Brewing (where they sold us a liter of beer and then let us have a picnic lunch behind the brewery. The beer was yummy. We were able to return the empty bottle after lunch, ahem.), Kassiks Kenai Brew Stop (LOVED the porter), and Kenai River Brewing (took home a growler of the Scottish Ale). *
We did manage to eat at one brewpub in Soldotna, St. Elias Brewing Company, where, as expected, both the beer and food were wonderful (the Mother's Milk Irish Stout was yummy.) Finally, we hit the Denali Brewing Company/Twister Creek Restaurant in Talkeetna when we drove up with hopes of seeing the Mt. Mckinley (we didn't). Their stout was served using nitrogen and I could have drunk a whole lot more than I did. Thankfully, I had a wonderful halibut sandwich and some of the best sweet potato fries I've ever had in my tummy to absorb the beer.
In addition to drinking lots of beer and eating lots of yummy food, Beer Geek was also able to refresh his beer t-shirt collection with 5 new short sleeve t-shirts and 1 new long sleeve t-shirt. Somehow (despite a 0 growth mandate) his beer glass collection grew by 3 glasses as well.
Thank goodness we walked/hiked a lot. I certainly didn't do enough running to overcome all that I ate and drank!
Back to the "real world" (oh yeah, I'm supposed to talk about running, right?), I had a fabulous 5 mile run yesterday. I ran it as a 4 mile progressive (9:43, 9:28, 8:4, 8:21) with a mile cool-down. 12 days of running in a row and I was able to do a couple of sub-9 miles! Woot! I think the cooler, low humidity weather played a big role in it.
Also, so far there are 52!!!! people signed up for the "Mama Goes Masters" virtual race. I think I'm going to have to come up with some decent awards (ooh, an excuse to go to my LRS LOL). On that note, anyone with skillz want to make a race bib for it? I have some ideas but zero artistic ability LOL.
*Beer notes are for Jamoosh. ;o)
