A lovely four mile swim run

I'm a bit behind in my 100 miles a month goal, thanks to skipping my run on Sunday in a favor of a trip to the pediatrician's office, followed by a few beers with Jamoosh.  ;o) At the start of the week, I think I needed about 13 more miles.  On Monday,  I only had a couple of hours while the kids were in camp and I had a few errands to run, so I planned to hit the treadmill when Beer Geek got home.   It's just been too hot lately at 4:30pm to run outside.

Around 3:00, suddenly the sky got very dark and the clouds opened up.  We got an inch of rain in about 15 minutes.  The boys were freaking out because of the wind and the thunder and lightening, but we didn't lose power or any tree branches and it ended fairly quickly.  I hopped on the local station's weather site and discovered the temperature had dropped 15 degrees.  Woohoo!  Time for an outside run.

Oh.my.goodness.  I should have just gone for a swim.  You could practically see the steam rising up from the hot cement.  I was drenched almost instantly and by the time I got home, you could have wrung water out of my hair.  My shirt (a white technical t) clung to me like I was participating in a wet t-shirt contest (the black running bra underneath and my decided lack of cleavage made it much more G rated than that however).

On the bright side, it was a fast four miles and I got it done, despite the humidity.  The rest of the week should be great with highs in the 80s and lower humidity.  I'm going to be loving that!

"Mommy's boyfriend came over for dinner..."

Beer Geek has jokingly referred to my brewer friends as my "beer boyfriends" for a long time.  He's happy to have me chat with a brewer because it usually means free beer for him.

Last night, Jamoosh came over for dinner.  He arrived carrying this:

Beer Geek instantly vaulted him to "beer boyfriend" status.

We had a lovely time.  Jones was in a horrid mood because he'd just been diagnosed with strep (again!) and Shoo was on a bit of sugar high from a birthday party, but Jamoosh took it in stride.  After a warm up beer each, we shared a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA, a 2006 Alaskan Smoked Porter, and a Heavy Seas Siren Noire.  There was also a dinner of sausages, spaetzle, and fresh veggies, but really the visit was all about beer (and running).

He may not smile for pictures, but I promise I did see him smile at least once during the evening. ;o)

As Shoo said after Jamoosh left: "Why did mommy's boyfriend have to leave?"  LOL

Jamoosh, you are welcome for dinner at our house anytime!  Hopefully next time you can bring Lady J.

Isn't that the way?

The heat here lately has been sucking all of my motivation to run long or run fast.  I've been all about the short runs at a 10+ minute pace.  Knowing today was going to be 78 degrees at 6:30 am and 80 degrees at 8:00 am, I wasn't particularly motivated to get up and out early.  It was going to suck either way.   Knowing I only needed 6 miles to hit my 20 for the week and knowing that I had two days to get the miles in didn't particularly motivate me either.

I finally headed out at around 8:15, knowing I needed to be back by a few minutes to 9, I planned 3 easy miles.  Mile 1 - 9:29 and it didn't suck.  Hmm, mile 2 - 9:36 and it still felt pretty good.  Mile 3 - 9:21, ok, that felt a little too fast.  Mile 4 - 9:42.  Crap, I'm feeling great, but I have to get home.  Isn't that how it always happens?

I got home and Beer Geek headed out, so I hit the treadmill for another 3 miles (1.3 barefoot).  My average pace for the 7 miles was about 9:40 and I could have definitely kept going if the natives hadn't gotten restless.

You know it's been hot for a while when an 80 degree run feels "pleasant".  And I know I've been whining a lot about the weather, but it's been unusually hot this June.  Usually the average high is 85 in June and so far this month only 5 days have been below 85.  14 days have been about 90 and we've hit 100 once already.

Don't miss out on the Ryders sunglasses giveaway!  Welcome to all my new followers!  I promise I'll get around to your blogs soon.

About that Pool Giveaway

If there is any company out there that would like to sponsor it, I'm here...

(pause)

Hmm, guess not.

So, instead, I've got two pairs of Ryders sunglasses to give!  There will be two lucky winners and the first name chosen by the random number generator gets to choose first.

Pair # 1:  Pink Flange glasses

Pair #2: White Flange glasses  (these don't offer a lot of "shading", but they are still offer 100% UV protection)

I LOVE my Ryders!  I've worn them for practically every run I've been on for the last few months.  They are so light and comfortable!  I was not a sunglasses fan until these, so the fact that I wore them for my entire marathon (although they were on my hat for a good part of it) says a lot about how awesome they are.

Want to win a pair? Follow this blog and leave me a comment that you follow.  Want another entry?  Do any or all of the following (a separate comment for each thing please!)...
  1. "Like" MCM Mama on Facebook
  2. "Like" Ryders Eyewear on Facebook
  3. Spread the word - post on your blog, twitter it (don't forget to include @mcmmama), post it on facebook...  Leave a comment for each one.
Giveaway ends July 2nd at 11:59 EST.

Disclaimer:  My pair plus the giveaway pairs were donated by Outside PR.  All opinions are my own.

Three Things Thursday

1. We are on track to have the hottest June on record.  Do I really need to say more about that?

2.  I am feeling a little overwhelmed lately.  Perhaps taking on a new "assignment" just as my kids are getting out of school and we are wrapping up all of the school related stuff was not the smartest move ever.  I feel like if I'm keeping up in one area of my life, I'm falling apart in another.  I used to be able to give up hours of sleep and make it all work, but either the heat is sucking all the energy out of me or I'm getting old.  ;o)  9:30 pm is starting to feel late to me and I'm still finding it impossible to get up early.

3.  I ran four miles in shoes on the treadmill yesterday, hopped off, and got back on barefoot for another 1.1 miles.  So far, I'm really loving the barefoot thing.  A friend lent me a copy of Born to Run to read and I plan to pick up the book Jamoosh mentioned to read on our upcoming vacation.  Unfortunately, I mistimed things, so I got to pick Shoo up from school looking like I'd been in a pool.  I think it may have been the first time I've ever gone out in public in a running bra, but I was so sweaty I was going to have difficulty getting a shirt on.

(A couple of people asked for info on the Spy Museum.  I put a review up on my other blog if you are interested.)

A lot has happened in 500 posts...

In the last 500 posts,  I've...
  • run more than 2200 miles
  • finished 2 marathons
  • run 5 half marathons and 1 17.75K
  • run 4 10 milers, 1 12k,  multiple 10Ks, 1 quarter marathon, one 4 miler, and numerous 5Ks.
  • raced in 10 states
  • PR'd at pretty much every distance
  • run 6 barefoot miles (cumulative), including one on pavement
  • biked 4 miles ;o)
  • volunteered at many races
  • run quite a few virtual races
  • won some neat stuff
  • given away a few things
  • met several RBFs
  • and, amazingly, suffered 0 injuries
It's been an amazing 2+ years and it's hard to believe I'm already a fifth of the way towards my 50 state goal.  We are having an incredibly hot summer this year, so I've canned any speed and distance goals for the time being.  I'll run when time and weather allow and do speed work when I can.

I had a lovely run on Monday with AJH.  We only did a little over three miles, because of the heat and my crazy life.  I had a great time chatting with her and I totally stole this picture from her blog.  After we ran, I ran back to my car and then hit the treadmill at home for a quick barefoot mile.  I'm still taking it really slowly as far as mileage goes, but I've been able to increase my running speed and knocked that mile out in under 9:30.  The achilles issue that popped up after the longer barefoot run has subsided, so hopefully keeping the mileage low will keep me uninjured.

Tomorrow's run will likely be on the treadmill.  The heat here is unbearable and the air quality sucks.  Fun, fun.

Stay tuned for a giveaway starting Friday to celebrate my 500 posts.  Here's a hint:  it's something that will help you out in the summer...

Running hangover?

Sunday morning I got up early and was out running by 6:30am.  It was one of those summer mornings where it was super sunny, 79 degrees, and really humid.  It felt much more like August than June, even for Virginia.  From the first step, the run was a struggle.  I was counting every tenth of a mile.  I had a minimum of 6 miles with a goal of 10.  I ran three miles away from my house, so that I'd be forced to manage at least the 6.

This run was definitely in the top 10 of sucky runs I've had in my life.  I was dripping sweat within minutes.  There was no breeze at all.  As I hit the 6.2 mile point (after a 12 minute pace on the 6th mile!), I could see my house and my water bottle was empty.  As you might guess, I quit running.  I figured I'd be kicking myself later, but I was just done.

When I hit the house, I immediately drank a glass of GU recovery drink.  I NEVER do that for short runs, but I was dying.  I then drank another glass of nuun and took a cool shower.

Despite that, I spent the next few hours feeling hung over.  Just for the record, I had precisely one third of a bottle of Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA the previous night.  That's it!  So, my "hangover" was directly related to the hot, sweaty, humid run.  In other words, I was apparently very dehydrated.  I actually even took a nap after lunch, which is not something I've done since college.  ;o)  By mid afternoon, I was finally feeling human again.

Today I'm meeting AJH from Age Groups Rock for a little run around an island.  I've prehydrated as much as possible, so hopefully there will be no more running hangovers in my future.

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to two of the best dads out there!

To the one and only Beer Geek - the one who plays with the boys while mom's out running, teaches them all the fart jokes they'll ever need to know, and is the "walking source of all useless knowledge" and answers all the "why" and "how" questions the boys come up with.

To my dad, AKA "Anonymous" in my comments - my favorite running partner, the person on speed dial under "home repair", and the person most likely to teach my boys how to be "cheeseheads".

Love you both!  Happy Father's Day!

Not sure where I'm going...

I was awarded the "You're Going Places" Award by G at Neurosis of the SAHM of 3.  I'm supposed to tell you where I think I'll be in 10 years and then give the award to 10 bloggers.

In 10 years, I will be just about to turn 50 (ack!) and I will have just completed my 50 States by 50 goal with a finishing race in Hawaii.  My new business of writing and coaching will have become big enough that I will no longer need to consider full-time employment or subbing in the schools.  Jones will be 18 and heading off to one of the awesome Virginia colleges and Shoo will be 14 and heading to high school.  Beer Geek will be contemplating retirement and getting ready to drag me all over the US, gathering counties and weird geographic stuff.

I award this to...

  1. Julie at Julie's Running Blog
  2. Jamoosh at Last Mile Lounge
  3. Meg at Meg Runs!
  4. Emz at If I can't convince you...
  5. Katie at Run This Amazing Day
  6. Liz at Lizard Runs
  7. Anne at Asthma and the Gift of Running
  8. Miss Zippy
  9. Molly at I'm a Sleeper Baker
  10. Wendy at Never Underestimate the Power of a Running Woman
And I saw a challenge over at Emz' and Tonia's blogs this morning.  I can't resist participating because of the contrast of my refrigerator and theirs LOL.

As you can probably tell, Shoo is in charge of refrigerator decoration at our house (and now, 10 minutes later, he's already rearranged it.  LOL)

Now that you've seen how chaotic my fridge is, I'm supposed to share with you...

  • a few things I like - Trader Joe's Greek yogurt, eggs, walnuts
  • what I can't live without - maple syrup!
  • what I should live without - the pizza
  • what I wish was in it:  hmm, how 'bout I just show you a picture of the other refrigerator?

Three Things Thursday

1.  Go check out my new gig.  I've been offered the opportunity to do some mommy blogging for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.    I'll be offering tips/reviews on things to do in the area, highlighting some local area resources, and generally chatting about raising kids in the DC area.   If you're local to me or you need more stories and pictures of Jones and Shoo, feel free to join me there and give me a little comment love as I'm feeling a bit like I'm talking to myself right now.  Don't worry though, I'll still be talking about running and beer over here.

2.  Speaking of running, I've been slowly building my mileage, but I've been doing a horrible job of slowing down.  Three days in a row now, I've done mini doubles.  Tuesday I did 4 and then 1 barefoot outside.  Wednesday, I did 1.3, came home, did some work I needed to get done, and then ran another 5.7 (followed by picking up Shoo from camp while I was still dripping.  Yeah, I'm that mom.)  Today I ran a quick 3.4, came home for a phone conference, and then did another 1.6 barefoot on the treadmill.  I'm beginning to feel like I'm spending the better part of each day sweaty.  Ewww!   My goal is to do three 5ish mile runs a week, one 6-9 mile, and one double digit.  I'm hoping that if I slow down a bit, my body will get used to five runs a week.

3.  The barefoot running is still going well.  The bottoms of my feet were pretty tender yesterday after the pavement run, so I waited until today to run barefoot again.  The jump from 1.1 to 1.6 was a bit much for my achilles today, but I'll stay at the 1.5ish distance for the next week.  I'm looking forward to getting the vibrams, but I have two concerns about that.  The first is that my toes are slightly crooked, so they may not fit right.  The second is that I can't stand the feel of a flip flop sandal, so what makes me think I can stand something between every toe?  Hopefully I'll get a chance to get to the store soon and find out.

And, just a heads up, this is post #496, which means post #500 and a giveaway are not too far down the road!

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Race photos

Pictures from Crossroads 17.75k

Just for the record, the bottoms of my feet are a bit tender after Tuesday's barefoot mile.  My mom flipped when she heard about it and said they'd buy me some Vibram Five Fingers, so I believe I'll be saving the truly barefoot running for the treadmill and running in the minimalist shoes outside.

The next Barefoot AngieB?

OK, probably not the next Barefoot Angie, but I did run another 1.1 miles barefoot today.

It's hot and grossly humid here again.  I'm not sure how we skipped June, but I'm pretty sure we've landed squarely in August.  Even our basement is hot because we aren't getting the normal nightly lows.  Have I mentioned I don't like hot?  ;o)

After dropping the boys off at school/camp, I called the exterminator and then headed out for a five mile run.  I had JUST enough time to do it before a technician was supposed to stop by.  I ran four miles faster than I meant to (9:49, 9:48, 9:58, 9:26) and was feeling really good, despite the heat.  As I was approaching the end of my fourth mile, I saw the exterminator pulling up at my house, so I sprinted home.  After he left, I knew I wanted to get in one more mile, so I decided to take the opportunity to run without shoes.

I originally planned to run circles in my yard (which is laughably small), but decided there were too many ridges hidden in the grass.  Instead, I hit the pavement.  Surprisingly, it wasn't that hot yet, so I ran a half mile each way out and back.

Things I learned:

  • I prefer blacktop to sidewalks.
  • The middle of the road is the smoothest.
  • The little rocks/sand that was in all the snow treatment stuff this winter hurt like a b*tch when you step on them.
  • The bumps that our county puts at sidewalk corners to alert blind pedestrians don't feel good on bare feet.
  • You get even more strange looks running barefoot than you do with knee highs.
  • If I don't run at least a 10 minute pace, I hit too hard with my heels.
  • My right ankle takes at least a half mile to get used to running without shoes.
  • I LOVE the way it uses the muscles in my thighs - totally different than running with shoes.
  • My feet were nowhere near as dirty as I expected when I got home.

I think there may be a pair of minimalist shoes in my future, just so I can go farther away from my house without risking cutting up my feet.  I'd love to eventually run a 5k barefoot, but that will require some very careful analysis of the course.

A mile in no shoes

After walking home from Savor barefoot last weekend, I've been wanting to try a little bit of barefoot running.  I have pretty tough feet, as I don't wear shoes in the house and usually not in the yard.  I also grew up spending a lot of time in the summer running around barefoot on my grandparents' farm.  So, I wasn't overly stressed about what I might step on.  I was, however, worried about the fact that I'm surrounded mostly by blacktop.   I tend to run in the late morning or early afternoon, so I'm afraid of burning the heck out of the bottom of my feet.

Since it was 93 degrees yesterday and something like 5000% humidity, I decided that my treadmill was a better place for my virgin barefoot run.  I hopped on the treadmill at a 12 minute pace, just to see how it felt.  I seemed to land too much on my heels at that pace, so I slowly picked it up to a 9 minute pace and found that as I got faster (and more near my comfortably easy pace), I was happier with how my feet hit.  I did one mile in 10:35 and was feeling pretty good, but could definitely tell I was using my muscles differently.  I decided to stop and put on my shoes because I didn't want to hurt myself the first time I tried it.

I hopped back on the treadmill with shoes on and it was the weirdest sensation EVER.  I felt like I was running on a firm pillow and that there wasn't enough room in the toes of my shoes.  Very strange.  I managed to do another 2.5 miles before I ran out of time.

Verdict:  I like barefoot running and will definitely be doing it again.  Next time, though, I will either do my shod miles first or separate shoe and barefoot running by days instead of doing them both in the same run.  If you run barefoot, how do you handle super hot streets in the summer?  Or do you just avoid them?

Gosh, I'm slow - Crossroads 17.75k Race report

And I'm not actually referring to the running (although a 10:12 average pace is nothing to write home about).  I just realized that both Tonia and G got their race reports up way before me.  They both have three kids and I only have two and yet, they managed to find time.  I'm gonna play the "age card" here.  LOL. (Photos below blatantly stolen from Racing with Babes 'cause I didn't take my camera)

Yesterday morning, I had my alarm set for 4:00am.  After a night of pretty much no sleep, thanks to worry about various things, I finally got up at 3:45.  After showering, eating, wandering around the house, I finally left at 5:30 to head to the race.  To be honest, I was absolutely dreading this race.  Hot, humid, and hilly is not something I enjoy.  In fact, if I hadn't been meeting two new friends, I likely would have blown off the race.

For once, the drive from DC was uneventful and I got there in 35 minutes, just as the cops started directing cars at the left turn into the parking area (Kudos to the race organizers and cops for that as the line of cars was just starting to get excessive.)  I parked and was heading to the porta potties when I saw two hotties rockin' running skirts and knee high socks.  Tonia and G!  Woohoo!  We hung out for a bit doing the usual pre-race stuff and talking a mile a minute and then it was time to go.  As both mentioned, the announcer was WAY too loud.  By comparison, the gun was too quiet.  Anyways, off we went.

My goal for the race was to a)finish upright, b)stick with T and G as long as possible, and c) finish with a 10:00 overall pace.  The first twoish miles were on the highway.  I was dripping sweat within minutes, despite the very comfortable pace we were running.    Finally, we turned into the forest.  I was excited by the shade, but disappointed by the running surface.  I'm a klutz and the thought of running the rest of the miles on an uneven surface with big chunks of gravel did not excite me.

As soon as we turned the corner, the hills started.  Pretty much the entire rest of the race was either up or down.   One of the most frustrating things for me was that I've perfected the art of flying down hills with a minimum of energy expenditure (one of the pluses of doing speed work in a hilly neighborhood), but I wasn't able to do that here.   The rocks and uneven surface made it entirely too likely that I'd break (or at least twist) an ankle.

I suggested to the gals that we walk the water stops.  I've found, over the course of a lot of 10+ mile races, that walking the stops does not hurt my splits and it enables me to drink powerade without getting it up my nose.  ;o)  They humored me and we walked.  In addition to a cup of powerade at every stop, I poured at least one cup of water on my head.

The LONG hill at mile 4 took a lot out of me, but I was still feeling pretty good.  The next four miles went by pretty easily as we chatted.  It was fun to hear all the compliments they got on their socks.  We stayed at an easy pace until mile 8.  When we hit the hill there, I needed to dial things back a bit.   My legs felt great (yay!), but my heart was racing from the heat and the hilly course.   T took off and from that point on, G and I walked at least a part of most of the hills.  We did have one major downhill once we hit pavement that we were able to fly down (my garmin recorded a 7:36 pace LOL).

At last, we turned out of the forest, into the sun.  We only had about a mile to go, but the heat was really zapping me.  When we had about a half mile to go, we hit a slight incline and I was pretty sure I was going to lose the contents of my stomach.  I made the decision to walk for a moment and sip some nuun.  I picked it back up and turned the corner - to another hill.  Since I'd already let go of my 1:50 goal, I walked again.  However, when I hit the top of the hill, I started sprinting.  There was some music playing that had the perfect beat and I timed my stride to the beat.  I passed every.single.person who had passed me on that last hill, plus a few that had already been ahead of me.  I turned the last corner, dug a bit deeper, and pushed hard for the finish line, finishing at about 1:52:25.

I had an awesome time with Tonia and G and will definitely be racing with them again.  The race was well organized and once I got used to the gravel, I actually liked the challenging course.  It did confirm for me that a little judicious walking (through water stops and on big hills) does not hurt my pace much.  In fact, my last mile was a 9:35, despite walking on several hills.  I would definitely consider doing it again, although waiting nearly an hour to get back to my car because of the shuttles plus a nasty high traffic stop and go drive home (in a stick shift car) make it a little less enticing.

So, two out of three goals accomplished, two awesome women met, and I've even made the promise that I'll wear a skirt and socks to run with them if they'll run a race with me when it's cooler out.

Early mornings, doubles, and treadmills, oh my!

T-minus two weeks until Jones is out of school for the summer.  Shoo is already done,  but is in a three hour morning camp four days a week until Jones is done.  What does this mean?  In two weeks, my nice little predictably scheduled world will come crashing to a halt.

I've never been a big fan of summer.  I don't like being sweaty (unless I'm running), I burn despite 70 SPF sunblock, and my eyes are extremely sensitive to bright sunlight.  I think that pools were designed as a torture device and let's not even discuss how much I dislike wearing a bathing suit.  If I had my say, the temperature would never get above 70 degrees.  (Yes, I realize I live in the south.  File that under: the things you do for love.)

So, here I am, hot, sweaty, and about to be juggling two very active boys for the summer.  They'll do a few camps in the mornings, but mostly we'll be checking out stuff around town and hitting the parks and the pools.  As you can imagine, this will make my running schedule a bit, um, unpredictable.

So, here's my plan to not only maintain my endurance, but possibly even increase it.  Since I'm trying to "run slower to run faster" and heat makes me slow anyways, I'll be seriously searching for chunks of time to run.

1.  Early morning running:  Pacers has a running group that meets at o'dark-thirty two days a week  (they actually have more, but location and time only work for me two days a week).  I'm going to start running with them.  Yes, I'm putting that in writing.  Harass me if I don't do it.  I'm also planning to make regular plans to run with running friends on weekend mornings.

2.  Doubles:  I'm going to have a hard time getting in more than 4-5 miles at a time, due to time constraints.  Beer Geek leaves for work really early, so I'll need to be home before 6:00am.  Thankfully, that means he'll also be home early, which leaves me a window in the afternoon to run 3-4 miles before dinner.   In the winter, I can easily crank out four in that time.  I have a feeling I'll be doing my 3 mile loop in the heat this summer.

3.  Treadmill:  If all else fails, we have a treadmill.  I can always hit that after the kids go to bed or on a particularly hot afternoon, while the boys play Wii.  I won't be able to carve out more than a half hour on weekdays, but this might be a good time to do my speed work.

4.  Races:  I've already signed up for a longish race in June and in July and I'm looking at a half marathon in August.  If nothing else, this guarantees at least one double digit run a month.

Beer Geek gets back from business travel this evening.  Highlights of my week include killing every single fish in Jones' tank, nearly breaking my leg thanks to 5,000 cars and monster trucks spread across my floor, and one dinner that consisted solely of a Founders' Porter and a klondike bar.  However, as of right now, we have five fish, one cat, and two boys still alive and I managed to run 13.2 miles this week and will run 11 more tomorrow.  I'm gonna call that a successful week.

Speed? What's that?

Yesterday I did speed work for the first time in ages.  I had planned to do it all through the marathon training, but as my mileage went up, my speed went down.  I found speed work frustrating because I couldn't meet my goals.  So, I stopped doing it.  And I got slower.  Quite the vicious cycle.

Anyways, I'm running plan-free these days, so I didn't know what I wanted to do.  The weather was perfect for speed (cool, cloudy, and misty), so I knew I needed to take advantage of that.  One of my mommy friends asked me how far I planned to run today and I told her I was going to run 4 miles or until I puked, whichever came first.  My newest Runner's World issue had an article on tweaking speed work, so I decided to try their suggestion for replacing mile repeats (my least favorite speed workout).  I used McMillan's calculator to figure out my 5k pace, based on my marathon time (9:08) and then split the difference between that and my fastest 5k (8:17).  8:45-8:50 was the goal.

Warmup mile - 10:14
1 mile: 8:48 pace
.75 mile: 8:45 pace
.67 mile: 8:39 pace
.5 mile: 8:37 pace
.37 mile: FAIL

When I tried to pick up the pace for the last two repeats/ladder/whatever you want to call it, I couldn't.  My legs would not go any faster than a 9:17 pace.  I was D.O.N.E.

I'm bummed that I've slowed down quite a bit since last fall.  I ran a 10k last fall at faster than my first mile pace, so this should not have been such a huge stretch for me.  It was difficult to stay at a steady pace because I ran this in my hilly neighborhood.  I also had to walk for at least part of every rest interval  to recover.  The hills did not help much with that either.  Those of you that do speed work, do you walk or jog slow between each interval?

Tomorrow will be an easy four miles.  I'm "racing" on Saturday at the Crossroads 17.75K with Momof3 and Tonia.  I can't wait to meet them and I hope they'll wait for me at the finish line because I'm pretty sure I won't be running at a sub-10 pace.  Oh well, it'll give me a PR to smash next year.  ;o)

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Washington, DC

The following two pictures only have one thing in common - they were both taken in DC.

"Hugging the Washington Monument"
(I'm pretty sure Jones would say they were measuring it.)

The Men of SAVOR

So, I got my annual picture of Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head on Saturday night.  Shortly thereafter, I got the harebrained alcohol-influenced brilliant idea of getting pictures of myself with as many brewers/owners as I could in the short amount of the evening remaining.  (What?  You wouldn't buy a calendar made solely of me with a bunch of different brewers?)  Luckily, I sobered up wasn't able to get 12 pictures.

Huge thank yous to the guys who tolerated me and even took a picture with a smile.  One thing I can say about craft brewers is that they are seriously nice people!

I think it's safe to say I had a good time at SAVOR.

Beer Weekend

For only the second time since Jones was born, Beer Geek and I went away for TWO nights.  Woohoo!   And we went all the way to DC, a distance of about 5 miles LOL.
The view from our hotel room

After checking into our hotel, we headed over to the Brickskeller for the Lupulin Reunuless.  The speaker list read like a "Who's Who" in craft brewing.  (Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada, Kim Jordan of New Belgium, Rob Tod of Allagash, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head, Greg Koch of Stone,  Bob Pease of the Brewers Association, and Bill Madden of Virginia’s brand new Mad Fox Brewpub)

Each brewer had brought 2 beers for a total of 12 beers to taste.  As per usual, they'd brought some unusual and/or hard to find beers.  I finally got to taste the Fritz and Ken's Ale and OMG it was every bit as good as Jamoosh said.  The beers were all quite good and the brewers were as entertaining as usual  (Greg Koch amused us with a word for word rendition of his quite wordy Arrogant Bastard label.)

You might, however, notice the sheen of sweat we are all wearing and the fact that my hair is pretty much plastered to my head.  I'm not sure what the issue was, but the air conditioning was not sufficient for the number of people in attendance.  The combination of beer and heat seriously dehydrated me.   In fact, when we headed back to the hotel, I ended up drinking a glass of nuun (and probably should have had more.)

Saturday morning, we got up and went to the International Spy Museum, the American Art Museum, and the Petersen House (where President Lincoln died).  Unfortunately, Ford's Theatre was closed this weekend.  After playing tourists in our own town, we headed to Gordon Biersch for lunch.

It's suddenly summer here, so I "glowed" (as my v-ball coach used to say).

Finally, on Saturday evening, we got to attend the event that had me more excited even than finishing the marathon:  SAVOR!  We were super lucky this year and got tickets to one of the Private Salons, so our evening started an hour early and was kicked off with a 10 percent ABV beer!.

We got to enjoy Full Sail brewing's 2006 Black Gold Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout paired with a chocolate covered cherry and their LTD #2 paired an Oregon goat cheese.  The food pairings were perfect!  The brewer and founder were interesting and knowledgeable, the swag was awesome (it included a Full Sail baseball cap), and the beer was plentiful.  It was an amazing kick off to the main event, held in the great hall of the National Building Museum.

Our first beer in the main hall was Alaskan Smoked Porter.  As one of my top 10 favorite beers, I was NOT going to miss out!  It was as wonderful as expected and I also got the chance to ask about a new source for shipping their beer, as my usual source has gone out of business.  (If this doesn't work out, I'll be throwing myself on the mercies of my PNW bloggy friends.)

My second beer of the evening was Dogfish Head's new release:  Bitches Brew.  IT.WAS.AMAZING. Seriously.  You can bet I'll be figuring out where I can get this locally.

Next stop?  Meeting up with a Daily Mile friend and fellow beer lover!

The rest of the evening was a blast.  I had some wonderful conversations with brewers and got to try some amazing beers.  Many of the beers were paired with chocolates, including one made with Old Bay seasoning.  The Old Bay chocolate was an unexpected combination that was phenomenal.    I'd like to say I remember every beer I tried, but I don't.  I would definitely say it was a roaring success once again and I remain hopeful that it will take place next year and we will once again be able to attend.  What an amazing weekend!**
Thank you to SaranacBrewery for the only pic of the two of us.

And all of you who take pictures of yourself should be impressed by Greg Koch's skill with the camera...
He could kiss my cheek and snap a perfectly centered picture at the same time!

Stay tuned for more pictures soon!  I haven't run since Thursday, so I don't have anything besides beer to talk about.  ;o)

Friday Randomness

  • I did manage to get in my second run.  I did four miles in very small loops around my neighborhood, including 8 times around the block in front of my house.  Why?  Because I could hear the thunder and the minute I saw lightening, I was done.  Despite the heat and humidity, I actually ran them nearly a minute faster per mile than the three I did in the morning.  Huh?
  • While I was down on my hands and knees scrubbing the shower tonight, I asked Shoo to get me a big cup of water from the sink.  His response: "ok, Princess".  Apparently in his world, princesses dress in trampy clothes and scrub bathrooms.
  • I had planned to make up a special package for winner #13 that would include some socks, nunn, the last item (a bottle opener), and some other random stuff.  Angie runs barefoot, works for nuun, and can't drink beer because of the gluten.  No worries - I'll still come up with some cool stuff for her, but  it's pretty amusing that she needs none of what she won.  ;o)
  • I am already quite a bit behind in blog reading/commenting.  This weekend will not help that at all.  Please don't take it personally if you don't hear from me for a bit while I work through the many posts in my reader.  I don't think I'll be touching the blog until Sunday, when I hope to have lots of interesting pictures for you all.
  • I don't usually see much interesting when I'm out on my runs.  Occasionally I'll get yelled at by a homeless person or have to dodge a random dead animal, but really, I run in a pretty boring urban environment.   This morning I saw a woman dressed in a really cute sundress, lovely jewelry, and rain boots.  Not cute rain boots.   Boots like you'd see on someone planning to wade through some nasty stuff.  Now, I'm all about wearing comfortable shoes when commuting, but this took the cake.
  • Today we are going on a field trip with Jones' class.  It's supposed to be 90+ degrees today.  I have I mentioned how much I hate being hot?  We will be going on a hay ride.  The combination of sweat + shorts + straw may be more than I can handle.
  • I discovered last night that the event we are going to tonight is not where I thought it was.  Good thing I figured it out last night.  Being on the opposite side of town from where you need to be on a Friday during rush hour would be an absolute disaster.
  • Jones just told me his mouth tastes funny - one of the signs that he's gets when he's getting strep.  I'll cry if he gets strep again.
Have a wonderful weekend!  See you on the flip side!

Three Things Thursday and Winner#13

1.  This weekend is SAVOR.  It's by far my favorite beer event of the year.  64 breweries with two beers each.  Plus we get to go to a pre-event educational salon.  Friday night we are attending a beer tasting RFD with some of our favorite brewers.  The problem?  Despite my love of good beer and my frequent discussion of said beers, I'm a serious light weight.  Drinking two beers is a lot for me.  So, I'll be working hard at moderation and only trying those beers I've never had or can't get around here.    I still imagine I'll be sweating beer when I run on Sunday.  ;o)

2.  Today I wanted to get in 6 miles, but I didn't get up in time.  So, I hit the road for a very slow, hot, sweaty, disgusting... three miles.  It was already 78 degrees and super sunny and humid when I went out.  Despite not pushing myself at all, I was totally wiped by the end.  My plan is to get in another three when Beer Geek gets home from work.  I have a feeling a lot of doubles may be in my summer running plan.

3.  I need some clothes for the events this weekend, so Shoo and I hit the store today.  Shoo decided to "help" me pick out dresses.   Apparently he thinks I'm a street walker - every dress he pulled out was either garishly bright or metallic and they were all cut down to my navel.  Each time he pulled out a dress, he informed me that it was a princess dress.  Not sure I'll ever want him dating the kind of "princess" that would wear the dresses he picked.  The best part?  When he pulled out a black and white floral dress and declared "Look, mommy, a COW! princess dress!"

And our Final Winner!  Lucky Winner #13!

Both boys insisted on picking this morning.  Shoo went first and pulled a name.  I looked at it and threw it back in the hat and mixed everything back up.  Then Jones picked.  I had planned on just going with Shoo's choice (it's not like the kids read my blog LOL).  As it turned out, they both picked the same person.

Winner #13, chosen by both boys, is

AngieB is an awesome barefoot runner, who I hope to meet one of these days when I head to the midwest.

Fine print:  Shoot me an email at mom2shoo at gmail.com and we'll discuss your prize options.  Congrats to all of my winners!  I hope to mail things out next week.  Stay tuned for more (much smaller) giveaways in the future.

Happy National Running Day!

Today is the second annual National Running Day.  Get out there and get your run!

Personally, I've misplaced my running mojo this week.  I didn't run on Monday.  No real reason, just didn't do it.  Yesterday Shoo didn't have school and I had a lot going on and Jones had soccer and...  Yes, lots of excuses that all came down to just not feeling like it.  Of course, with my current stress level,  I probably needed the run.

Today looked much the same.  No school for Shoo, a trip to an office supply store for ink, paperwork to be printed, filled out, mailed, etc.  You name it, I had an excuse.  I knew our evening was going to be messed up too as this is Jones' late day at school.  So, I made a deal with myself.  If I woke up when Beer Geek's alarm went off (I often don't), I'd get out of bed and run.

Guess what?
I did it.  Four sweaty miles at 6 am on the treadmill.  What a great way to start the day!
