How life is like a marathon + 3 more winners

I've been wound a bit tight this weekend, trying to figure out some of the legal and tax implications of being "self employed".  As a legal librarian (not a lawyer or accountant), I know just enough to be dangerous. ;o)  I called my dad tonight, feeling very stressed about "ohmygoodnessIdon'tknowhowtosetupanLLCorhowthatworkswithtaxesorwhotocallorwhattodo..."  I was practically hyperventilating and near tears.  His response?

"You've run a couple of marathons and a lot of long races.  You know you can't worry about the entire 26.2 all at once.  You'll just get overwhelmed.  You worry about the first mile and take the remaining ones as they come.  So, just figure out what piece you need to start with and deal with that first."

Right, Dad.  Thanks for the reminder.

*Taking a deep breath*

Anyways, between my dad's advice and a 2.5 mile run last night that involved approaching my puke threshold, I think I've got a better grip.  As I mentioned on facebook,  sometimes I have to run so that I don't run away.

On to more fun things...

Three more winners!  Jones was mad that Shoo got to pick all three winners last time, so he picked today.  He refused to dress up for your enjoyment.  Sorry.

Winner #10 is
Badgergirl at Adventures of Badgergirl lives in the awesome state of Wisconsin and just finished her "comeback" half marathon.  I may refuse to mail her gift and instead make her meet me halfway when I go home in August. ;o)

Winner #11 is
Molly over at I'm a Sleeper Baker focuses on food and running.  Maybe she'll run the Boilermaker with me in a year or two...

Winner #12 is
Bethany and Ryan over at Our Love on the Run are a fun couple who just completed their first ultramarathon!  WTG!

Fine print:  Email me your choices at mom2shoo at gmail.com within 48 hours.  I think the remaining items are an Abita beer glass, a Capital City brewing glass or other item, the Dogfish Head beer opener, coffee, and a random assortment of running nutrition goodies.  Check here for details of each item and please send me a list in your preferred order.

Double digits plus 3 more winners

Yesterday I went for my first double digit run since the marathon.  I ran a hot, sweaty, slow ten mile run from Iwo Jima out to near Belle Haven and back.  I really hope my legs aren't completely recovered, because the last five miles were darned hard.  I have a spot behind one knee that announced its presence towards the end of the marathon and decided to give me a little trouble again yesterday.  I'm not sure what it is and it feels more sore than actually painful, but I'll definitely be watching it.  Thankfully, a friend asked me to run with her, so the miles passed pretty quickly despite the heat, hills, and tired legs.

We've had a nice weekend so far, with some playdates, a birthday party, a cookout with friends, Rolling Thunder, and "How to Train Your Dragon" at the Cinema and Drafthouse.  It's summer here this weekend, so I'm sure there'll be some playing in the sprinkler at some point today or tomorrow.  I, on the other hand, really need to knock out a couple more miles today to hit my goal of 20 for the week.  I'm dreading heading out in the 85+ degree weather.  Bleh.

And now, the winners...

Shoo once again dressed for the occasion.  Today he decided to get with the Memorial Day theme and dress in uniform.

He also chose a new vessel for the names - his knight helmet.

Winner #7 is
MissZippy is a speedy runner who recently got her RRCA certification and writes a blog with lots of useful running tips.

Winner #8 is
Kristin over at Running with the Runner Girl is about ready to run another marathon.

Winner #9 is
Katie over at Run This Amazing Day is currently trying to get her ITB to let her run again.  While it's healing, she's gettin' strong at the gym and posting pictures of her pup.

Fine print:  Email me at mom2shoo at gmail.com within 48 hours.  Check out the remaining items (the sunglasses, SPIbelt, socks, Bondi Band, nuun, and Mad Fox glass are gone) and let me know what you want.   Three more winners will be announced in the next couple of days and then the final winner will be announced by the end of the week.  And trust me, being winner #13 is not a bad thing.  ;o)

Fit? Maybe. Fast? Not so much, plus 3 more winners

Remember that whole Fit and Fast thing?  Yeah, that's not exactly screaming along.  Sigh.  As I mentioned earlier, my running has not exactly gone well this week.  Today is another non-running day as Friday's just don't generally allow for much beyond a walk or a little bit of toning work.

On the plus side, last week 1 rode a bike, did a bunch of pushups and a few core exercises, participated in Week 1 of Inperspire's Weekend Boot camp, and ate fairly well.  On the not so plus side, I definitely could have hit it harder on the cross training front and my "no sugar" thing came to a screaming halt yesterday thanks to a bag of marshmallows.  If I had to have a total and complete sugar meltdown, I wish it had at least been something worth eating, not a bunch of sugar and chemical puffs.  Oh well, on to the next week.  Up first - Boot Camp Week 2.

And now on to the second set of Winners!  As you can see, Shoo dressed for the occasion...

Winner #4 is
Julie is a fairly recent comer to my blog, but she's an awesome mom of three from the great midwest who's rockin' the half marathons and just signed up for a marathon.

Winner #5 is
Xenia over at Diggin' It is our PhD student abroad who just completed a hellishly hot marathon in Edinburgh.  I can only imagine what it's going to cost me to mail her prize.  ;o)

Winner #6 is
And then there's Jamoosh over at Last Mile Lounge...  He's funny, he loves beer, he runs, and he's got the awesome Lady J at his side.  And he has a heck of a lot of giveaways going on this week - so go check out his blog.

Fine print:  The nuun, SPIbelt, and sunglasses are taken, so go pick from the remaining items.  Email me at mom2shoo at gmail.com within 48 hours.  Since it's a holiday weekend, no guarantees of when the next winners will be selected, so watch your "reader" for the next up.

Three Things and Three Winners Thursday

1.  Running has sucked this week.  Truly sucked.  On Monday I went out for a 3-4 mile run.  At mile 2.5, my GI system ended the run.  Since I live in an urban area, a tree was not an option.  I've never been so thankful to see my front door.  Tuesday I ran a mile after the bike.  Thankfully, that one was uneventful.  Yesterday's run hit the trifecta - hot, hilly, and humid.  Bleh.  It took me almost 43 minutes to do 4 miles.  Today is even hotter and I'm just not feeling the running love, so I'm taking the day off.

2.  Today is the last day of preschool for this year for Shoo.  Can you hear me freaking out?  First, I'm sad because it's been such an awesome experience for him and I'll miss his teachers.  Second, I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to run anything longer than four miles during the week.  He's not one to sit for long in a stroller and Beer Geek leaves early for work, so I can't manage seriously long miles in the morning.  I think I may have to just accept that this summer will be shorter (hopefully faster) runs and just enjoy the break from longer runs.  I think I'll try to get in at least one 10-13 mile run each weekend and I've signed up for one longer race each month, just to keep my endurance up.

3.  I recently interviewed for a freelance gig and am the interview went really well.  I'm absolutely confident I can do the work and do it well.  However, now I need to start researching all the tax/social security, etc. implications of contract work (not even sure if that is different from freelance.)  I know many of you have some experience in this area, so hit me up with "101" websites or publications.  I'm way more nervous about that aspect than I am about the actual job LOL.

And, now, what I know you are really waiting for...

The boys chose three winners for me today...

Winner #1 is...
I have to admit that I'm super excited that X-Country2 won.  If anyone deserves to win, it's her - she just ran a 5k while 7 months pregnant with twins and she ran it faster than some of my recent 5ks!

Winner #2 is
Tonia over at Racing with Babes is one of my favorite running moms.   When I grow up, I want to be like her (never mind that I'm at least 10 years older LOL).

Winner # 3 is
Missy at Ironman, IronThings, ... just completed the Triple T!  I bow down to her amazing fitness and mental strength!

My boys obviously have good taste in women.  Hope someday when they start bringing home girlfriends, those girls are as awesome as today's winners.

(Fine print:  Email me at mom2shoo at gmail.com within the next 48 hours.  XC2, you get first choice.  TMB, give me your top 2 choices.  Missy, give me your top 3.  I hope to pull the next three winners tomorrow, but if not, I'll do it Saturday.)

Stay tuned for more winners!

Baby brick

This morning I did two things I've never done before in my life: 1) I did a "brick workout" (bike then run for those who don't know) and 2) wore a bike helmet.

Now, before you go yelling at me about not wearing a helmet before, please understand that the last time I rode a bike, it was pink and had streamers and a banana seat.

I'm not sure they even sold helmets for kids back then.  Luckily, Jones' helmet is adjustable and I was able to wear it today.

Also, don't get any ideas about possible triathlons in my future.  Tri's involve swimming and swimming with any speed requires putting my face in the water.  That?  Won't be happening.  Some day in the future, however, a duathlon might occur.

Anyways, recently our neighbors gave us two bikes.  I'm in the process of trying to figure out who should have the bikes that we got and who gets a new one.  Judging by the bruise I'll soon have in a place I don't share on the 'net, I think it might be me.  I rode the bigger bike (a Huffy Rocktrail 26") today and could barely touch the ground with my legs over the bar, which meant a little pain when I accidentally stopped suddenly.

I did 3 miles on the bike in 21 minutes and 1 mile of running in 8:26.  Yes, I do realized I wasn't biking much faster than I ran.  When you haven't biked in more than 20 years, speed is not your friend.  I then did a quick 100 ab exercises and 100 pushups and called it good.  I did Inperspire's Virtual Bootcamp Challenge over the weekend and am trying to keep up some semblance of cross training.

So, anyone got some good "biking 101" websites I should check out?  Or any suggestions of a good fairly inexpensive bike that would work for me now and Jones later as he gets taller?  (Are there unisex bikes?)  I know NOTHING about biking.  Also, I'm pretty sure I need a softer (or at least easier on my bits) seat.  Any recommendations?

And don't forget, the BEER IS GOOD! Giveaway ends Wednesday night at midnight!

7 things about me

Anne over at Asthma and the Gift of Running tagged me for the Versatile Blogger Award.

I'm supposed to tell you 7 fun things about me.

1.  I have a mild case of amblyopia (AKA "lazy eye").  To strengthen the weaker eye, I wore a patch for a short time in grade school.  On school picture day, I happened to have it on and the photographer refused to let me take it off (I think he was worried about what was under the patch LOL), so I'm wearing a patch in that year's school picture.  I still give my mom a hard time about how "traumatic" that was for me.  ;o)

2.  When I was a freshman in high school, I played volleyball on a club team.  As part of our conditioning workout, we used to push cars.  There was a point in time that my legs were so strong I could push a small car by myself.  Best.leg.workout.ever.

3.  If I don't write it down, it didn't happen.  I remember things by writing them down.  If I write it down, I can pull up a mental picture of the page and "read" what I wrote.  Needless to say, my notes during college and grad school were quite detailed.

4.  I have a horrible time remember names, but I'll always remember your face.  If I see someone regularly (at the store or on the metro, etc.) and then see them randomly somewhere else, it causes me a lot of confusion because I'll recognize their face and not be able to remember their name.  It always takes me a while to realize that I never knew their name in the first place.

5.  My bridal shower was thrown by one of Beer Geek's groomsmen.  As such, it was co-ed and involved an interesting combination of college friends and library students (I was working on my Masters in Library Science at the time).  One of the (male) librarians came in a boa.  Several people brought pies.  The event will forever be remembered as "Librarians with Pies".  The coolest part, though, is that the guy throwing the shower met one of my library friends and they will shortly be celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary.  (Happy anniversary, J &J!)

6.  The thing I miss most about working outside the home is wearing pretty shoes.  I have a huge collection of dressy shoes, including 10 pairs of black heels.  Yes, 10.  No, that does not include any other color or boots or casual shoes.  Now I pretty much only wear running shoes or comfortable shoes.  Why?  Because as a mom of boys, I always need to be prepared to rescue a kid from the top of the playground equipment or wade into a stream to retrieve a kid or ball.

7.  As an undergraduate, I planned to get my degree in Russian Studies.  In fact, the availability of this degree played a major role in my choice of universities.   In my second semester of college, I got a D+ in Russian (and I'm pretty sure the TA was being generous).  I could not learn the language, no matter how hard I tried.  Needless to say, I changed majors pretty darn quick.

I'm supposed to tag 15 people, but I'm dealing with a kid with strep and about 5,000 minor things going on.  If you are a new follower, consider yourself tagged and leave me a comment with the link to your 7 things and I'll add you later.

600 miles and Rock Your Socks 10K

Hosted by the awesome TMB at "Racing with Babes"

I knew today's 10K would not be a PR before I even put on my shoes.  (I know, shoot high, right?)  My legs are still tired from the marathon, it was warm out, and I *may* have overindulged a bit last night.  I set out with the following goals:  C - Finish; B- Keep each mile under 10, and A - Finish the 10K under an hour.

I dressed in my "Rock Your Socks" outfit and got ready to head out...

What?  Do you think TMB is cringing?  Ok, even I wouldn't go out of the house dressed like that.  (Sadly, on the computer, it's not nearly as obvious that my shirt is hot pink, my shorts are orange, and my shoes are red LOL.)

So I changed into a different outfit.  Honestly, I'm still not sure I "matched", but I think it's a little better, right?  Yes, I bought those socks just for today and yes, Shoo wore them yesterday.

Surprisingly, I hit all three goals and finished in 59:45 and I was only cursing TMB a little bit.  My legs hurt by mile 4 and I was completely soaked in sweat.  The last two miles were a battle every.step.of.the.way.  (How on earth did RunningLaur manage an ultra last night?  I haven't even tried for double digits since the marathon.)

Oh, well.  I survived, I got my weekend run out of the way, and I passed 600 miles for 2010.  Thanks for organizing the race and getting me out there!

I also don't know how TMB wears knee high socks.  This is what mine looked like by the end (because I was hot, not because they fell down).

Here's hoping I can get some speed back before I meet up with TMB at the Crossroads 17.75k or she'll be leaving me in the dust!

Just for "Racing with Babes"

Thigh highs.  ;o)  Enjoy, TMB!

And, just for the record, because I drink good beer, the 13th winner of my giveaway will now score an extra glass.   Yeah, that's why I had an extra beer tonight.  Just for you all.

Fit and Fast by Forty

In three months, I hit a new decade.  I am not really having any angst about turning 40, but I do want to hit my 40s in great shape.  My 30s were hard on my body.  I spent much of that time trying to get pregnant, pregnant, or nursing.  I looked like this twice:

36 weeks with Jones

36 weeks with Shoo

I went for months without running, I fought postpartum depression with Jones, I didn't sleep more than two hours in a row for YEARS (thanks, Jones), and at one point I lived on five foods (rice, turkey, pears, sweet potatoes, and avocado) as we tried to figure out what Shoo was allergic too.

In the last few years, I've started to get my body back.  I've trained for and run 2 marathons, 5 half marathons and many shorter races.  I eat healthy most of the time.  I'm at an ok weight for my body, with incredibly strong legs.  In fact, I look pretty good:

But I want to see how much stronger and faster I can get.

To that end, I plan to:
  1. Cross train - I plan to spend some time with Jillian and maybe with P90x and if that doesn't seem to float my boat, I'll head back to the gym.
  2. Do some speedwork, despite loathing hot weather running.
  3. Eat "cleaner".  It's the time of year when fresh vegetables and fruit are everywhere.  I plan to take advantage of that.  I will not, however, completely give up beer.
I'm kicking off my speed program with the Virtual "Rock Your Socks" 10K.  I'm not expecting a PR, but I think it will be a great way to judge where I am now.  Along the way, I'll be joining TMB for the Crossroads 17.75k, hitting up some 5ks for speedwork and to check my improvement along the way, and finishing it all at the Clarendon Day 10K in September to see how I've improved.

Hit me up with your favorite DVD or favorite speed workout.  I can use all the help I can get!  If anyone else wants to join me, I'm happy to link you when I do updates.  Let me know. (And don't forget to sign up for my giveaway before next week.)

Three Things Thursday

  1.  On Wednesday, I couldn't resist going for a run.  I only did 2.5 easy miles, but they felt awesome.  The only reminder of the marathon was a lingering soreness in my left quad.  My knee that started hurting around mile 23 seems to be healed.  I could barely walk at this point after my last marathon, so I'm a happy camper.  As part of my run, I put my SPIbelt to a huge test.  I needed to pick up a prescription, so I put my cell phone, keys and mini-wallet in the belt and ran to the store.  On the way home, I had all of the above, plus the bottle of pills.  While it looked kind of funny, rattled, and required that I turn my phone off because it kept taking pictures inside of the belt, it worked.  The pharmacist didn't believe I could get it all in there LOL.
  2. As part of my "Fit and Fast by Forty" plan (which I will officially kick off with the Rock Your Socks 10k this weekend), I'm trying to get back into better eating habits.  To that end, I've temporarily given up added sugar.  I've been on a major sugar binge for the last few weeks and I just need to get the cravings under control.  So far, it's been two successful days.  It'll be interesting to see if I can still choose an apple with peanut butter over something sweet after I've had a beer with dinner on Friday night.
  3. I am planning to get my RRCA coaching certification this fall.  So far, the closest class is in Maryland on a weekend when I'm in Wisconsin.  Sigh.  I've heard rumors that they run a class around the Marine Corps Marathon in the fall, so I'm hoping that will pan out.  I'm challenging myself to save up the money for the class from the small things I do that bring in what Beer Geek calls my "pin money" (online surveys, subbing at the preschool, selling the kids outgrown toys, etc.).  There's no real reason to do it as we can afford the class, but I want to see if I can.  Beer Geek just rolled his eyes at me when I told him.  LOL
Speaking of subbing, I'm spending today at Shoo's preschool, subbing in the older class.  I'm doing it in part because they needed a sub, but also because I want to explore that as a potential time filler once the boys are both in school.  Gotta love a job where your clothing choices revolve around whether you can sit on the floor in them and if they are easily washable.  ;o)

Mostly Wordless Wednesday: Finish Line

I call this: "Oh, thank God, I'm done!"
(Thanks to my friend, T, for taking the pic)

And some pictures from last week's anniversary dinner:

Beer

Sausages and spaetzle

Rugelach
(Please note that the beer is served in the correct style
of glass, while the dessert was served on plastic plates.
This tells you a lot about me. )

More than you ever wanted to know

This report is going to be super long.  I need to get it all out of my head and onto "paper" so that when I consider doing this again, I can see what I was thinking.  Not that that stopped me from running a second marathon after saying "never again" during the first.  Grab a beer (or coffee or wine, whatever) and settle in.  Or, just look at the pictures LOL.

Thank yous:

  1. To my darling Beer Geek - for supporting me through the training, for delivering the newsletters that came on the worst day possible, for driving there and back through hideous DC traffic, for wrangling the boys and then bringing them to the finish line.  I couldn't do it without you.
  2. To my boys - for putting up with mommy constantly going out for a run, for accepting that mommy was sometimes cranky after long runs, for frequently asking me if I'd won after I finished a run, for running me in at the end of the marathon.
  3. To my family and friends - for listening to me when I talked about nothing but the marathon, for watching the boys whenever I needed to get a run in, for believing in me, for the awesome notes on FB that I've received over the course of the training (especially the last few days).  You all are awesome!
  4. To my blog friends - for reading and commenting and keeping me focused.  I also blame you all for getting me into the situation in the first place, though.  ;o)

Lessons learned:
  1. I will never run a small race for anything over the length of a half marathon again.
  2. I prefer rolling hills to completely flat.
  3. I'm too much of a city girl to run (non-technical) trail races. (And too much of a klutz to run a technical trail race LOL).
  4. Running a marathon anywhere besides my home area needs to involve extra days at the location, not drive up Saturday, run, drive home Sunday.
  5. Sometimes it doesn't hurt any more to run "fast" than it does to run slow.
Pre-Race

I was a nervous wreck the day before the race.  This was at least in part because I had to pack for the marathon and for the trip.  I got to a point where I was practically shaking.  Finally, we had everything in the car and started the trip to York.  Less than a half hour into the trip, we hit a huge backup on the beltway.  As in, completely stopped.  We ended up getting off at the next exit, going back the other direction, and catching a different road.  Finally, after a totally stressful drive,  Beer Geek dropped me at packet pickup.   There were no signs in the lobby of the hotel to tell us where to go (the one and only organizational negative of the whole race), but I found the pick up and got my packet.  They had switched to technical t-shirts (Yay!) but the size medium is a dress on me (boo!).  Oh well, I'm sure I'll still wear it.  When we finally got to our hotel at 4:30, Beer Geek was beat and we discussed going to the  Ruby Tue.sdays next door for dinner.  Anyone who's read this blog for a while knows how painful that would be for us.  I convinced him that it was worth it to drive the 20 or so minutes to a brewpub in Mount Joy (I even offered to drive - which he took me up on for the drive back.)  Anyways, the brewpub was awesome, the beer and food were good, and we were all in a better mood when we got back to the hotel.  We took a quick swim with the boys, I laid out my clothes, and we all hit the beds nice and early.

Where I proceeded to not sleep at all.  Sigh.  I got up at 4:15, got ready, and RunningLaur and her mom picked me up around 5:45.  (HUGE thank you to them both for allowing me to let the boys sleep in and still have them be at the finish. )  It was cool out (I wore a pair of Beer Geek's old socks as arm warmers, 'cause I'm classy like that.), but I'd prefer cool to hot any day.  I got the chance to meet Abby before the race and then it was time to line up.

The Race

Right before the race, I decided I'd aim for 10:18 miles, which would bring me a 4:30 marathon time.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?  The race was not chip timed, but I knew I didn't want to race to hard at the finish, so I hung at about the middle of the pack with RunningLaur and one of her friends.  We stayed together for about the first mile, but near the end of that mile, she wanted to stick with her marathon plan and I'd fallen into a nice groove right around 10:15 miles.  I also happened to be running right behind Tammy and was enjoying listening to her talk to another runner about her ultramarathons. (One of these days I need to introduce myself or she's going to think I'm a stalker LOL)  I was bummed when it became apparent around mile 2 that they were going to be going just a bit faster than I wanted to go and they moved ahead of me.

Then, around mile 3, I met Bob.  Bob was planning to just finish, but he was feeling good at that point and running exactly the pace I needed to go.   We ran together to at least mile 10, sometimes with me needing to catch up to him when I did a GU or walked a water stop.  It was nice to chat with someone and have basically a pacer, as he was running a pretty steady pace.  The times of my first 10 miles show this - 10:12, 10:16, 10:18, 10:15, 10:24, 10:10, 10:19, 10:11, 10:07, 10:12.

We split somewhere near mile 11 when he stopped to fill his water bottles.  I got to wave at him after the turnaround, but from mile 11 on, I was on my own.  I felt GREAT at this point.  I'd taken GU as planned and had something to drink at every water stop.   Unfortunately, once I was completely by myself, I started speeding up.  The next five miles were my best miles, both in terms of how I felt and my speed.  Miles 11-15 - 10:22, 10:07, 10:04, 9:54, 10:02.  If a marathon were 15 miles long, this would have been an amazing race.  Sadly, it's 26.2.

The first part of mile 16 sucked.  I was feeling sick to my stomach and exhausted.  In retrospect, I think it was because I had pushed too hard for four miles, waited too long to take my 3rd GU, and had run through two of the water stops in that area.  I don't know if taking it easier would have made much of a difference in my final time or in how I felt near the end, but I'm pretty sure mile 16 would have felt better.  Thankfully, there was a water stop in mile 16, where I got a half of a banana as well as water and  whatever the sports drink was.  The banana was the best thing EVER.  It settled my stomach.  While I never really regained my speed or my energy,  I did at least stop feeling like puking was imminent.  Mile 16 took me a little over 11:30, which was my slowest mile until mile 25.

The remaining 10 miles are pretty much a blur.  This was one of the reasons I will never run a marathon on a trail again.  I was completely alone.  As in, I could see a runner in the far distance occasionally, but really, for the most part, all I could see were flowers and trees.  I should have pulled out my ipod, but I just didn't have the energy.  I walked every water stop and I did some GUs.  Along the way, I saw a guy skipping the marathon.  As I followed him, I gave that a try and discovered it loosened up my very tight hips.  I'll have to remember that!  I passed him and kept on going.  At mile 20, I called Beer Geek and told him I had about an hour to go, so that they knew when to meet me.  At mile 23, the back of my left knee began to hurt, but not enough that I couldn't run.  I found that running slowly didn't feel any better than running faster, so I tried to push myself.  It's really hard to try to push from landmark to landmark when there are no landmarks.  I kept making myself run to the next tree or the purple flowers or occasionally a big rock or bridge.  I was starting to get a little loopy and wanted to stop, but I just kept counting down tenths of miles on Garmin.

At mile 25, my other leg began to cramp up.  I was pretty sure if I walked, I'd not start running again, so I just kept trudging along.  When I hit one mile to go, I began singing "99 bottles of beer on the wall."  I knew when I finished, I'd be done.  By this point, it was quite warm out and there was no more shade.  I was just trudging along, one step at a time.  Finally, I hit the end of the trail and I had only .2 left to go.  Splits for miles 17-26 - 10:38, 10:34, 10:44, 10:49, 10:13, 11:21, 11:11, 10:50, 11:23, 11:35.

That last .2 involved the only hill to speak of and then about .1 on a track.  I trudged up the hill, figuring I had nothing left to give.  However, as I stepped on the track, they announced my name and I could see my boys on the infield, near the finish line.  I started picking up my speed, knowing I wanted to have nothing left at the end.  As I got near Jones, I yelled at him to join me.  He thought I was crazy, but he started running.  As we got closer, I was still picking up speed and Shoo jumped in too.  Typical of his personality, he stayed ahead of me and I had to give everything I had to try to catch him.   I don't know exactly how long that .2 took as I forgot to turn off Garmin, but my best pace during that time was a 7 minute pace!

Post race
After the race, we hung out in the mid-field for a bit.  I was covered in salt and exhausted and my legs were cramping up, but a friend and her family had driven a couple of hours just to see me finish, so I wanted to talk to them for a bit.

Some volunteers came over and gave me and the boys cookies and bananas and then we raced back to hotel to clean up and drive home.  Our drive home went as well as any drive on a Sunday near D.C. can go.  Which basically means that by the time we got home, Beer Geek was in dire need of some quiet time.  I spent the remainder of the day rockin' my compression socks (CEP compression socks recommended by my LRS and Recovery Socks I won from Erica) while unpacking, doing laundry, and hanging with the kids.  I'm convinced that the walking up and down the stairs yesterday is why I'm feeling good today.  My sore knee has stopped hurting and I'm a bit stiff and tired, but generally I feel great!

I have to give kudos to Sean Potts and the rest of the organizers.  It was a really well organized race, with great snacks during and after, awesome volunteers, and wonderful water stops.  I would, however,  not do it again.  I've got too much "city" in me to spend that much time by myself on a trail.

So, what's next?  Not another marathon.  I'm thrilled with the time I managed and I'm thrilled that all my miles were sub 12 and most were sub 11.  I'm not going to say never (that 4:30 is still whispering my name), but I am going to say not for a while.  I realized during training and during the race that I love running until about 15 miles and then I hate running.  HATE running.  Since I run to stay happy and sane, hating running is not a good thing.

Here's the plan:

  • Reverse taper this week
  • Run the Rock Your Socks Virtual 10k this weekend
  • Start my "Fit and Fast by 40" plan next week (more on that later)
Tomorrow or Wednesday:  Check back for my "Beer is Good" giveaway to thank all my awesome readers, especially those 151 of you who follow!
